In the Boegli family, watchmaking is more than a trade ; it is a true passion, shared by several generations. In fact, the start of the family’s watchmaking history goes back no less than four generations. At the beginning of the 20th century, Louis Schwab settled in Moutier to establish a watchmaking factory.
In 1904, he created the well-known SWIZA brand, and quickly became the leading manufacturer of alarm clocks and travelling clocks. Louis Schwab was not only the boss of a watchmaking factory with nearly 350 employees, he was also the father of 15 children.
After the founder’s death, not all of them could manage the family firm. That is why one of the daughters encouraged her husband, Benjamin Boegli, to set up his own company and to establish himself in Grandval, where he would make watch dials for clocks and watches, particularly for the Swiza brand. His son Jacques succeeded him and developed the business by supplying dials throughout the world.
After a few years, Jacques BOEGLI decided to go back to his roots and to manufacture complete watches. First, he made watches under the brand B-Watch, destined for the tourist market in Switzerland. Then, passionate about the pocket watches, he created the Jacques du Manoir brand and became one of the biggest Swiss manufacturers of pocket watches, with more than 300 different models. Very quickly, he encouraged two of his six children to be interested in watchmaking. Within a few years, the development of the two brands took off to such a degree that it became necessary to separate the manufacture of the dials and that of the watches. His son Michel pursued the manufacture of dials, and Jacques BOEGLI settled with his son François in new premises in Moutier. Passionate about watchmaking and aware of the fact that the company had returned to Moutier, exactly where a century earlier his great-grandfather had produced his first watches, François decided to make mechanical watches as ‘in the good old times’.
Over several months, surrounded by a few passionate and keen people, he developed a collection of mechanical pocket watches with a musical movement. In order to clearly show their difference from the other watches manufactured by the company, he decided to sign them with his name: quite simply BOEGLI. Although there are still only a few of these watches, François Boegli stresses that the collection will grow and that soon, one will see wrist watches with a mechanical musical movement!
